Operation
School Bell provides children in need with appropriate
assistance to enhance self-esteem, to promote learning and to encourage
regular school attendance. Since 1992 local Santa Clarita Valley
children have received new shoes, clothing, backpacks, health care
kits and homework supplies. The health care kits are provided by
Assisteens, an auxiliary of Assistance League of Santa Clarita,
through its philanthropic project "I Care About Me".
Operation
School Bell is currently underway in the Newhall, Saugus, Sulphur
Springs, and Castaic school districts. School personnel help to
identify at-risk students and refer the family to the chapter. In
a discrete and sensitive manner, the child and parents are invited
to the chapter’s Operation School Bell distribution center
on San Fernando Road to pick up their new clothing and other items.
The Kids on the Block are a troupe of child-like
puppets that talk to children about social issues. such as gang
awareness, divorce and learning disabilities. The Kids on the Block
came about as a result of U.S. Public Law 94-142, which is known
as the "ma instreaming
law". Its purpose was to have disabled children educated along
with regular children in a normal classroom setting. The Kids on
the Block puppets help educate children about what it is like to
be experiencing some of life's challenges. Assistance League members
act as puppeteers and perform the scripts prepared by the national
Kids on the Block organization to local elementary school children
at school assemblies. The "Kids" interact with the students
encouraging them to develop an attitude of smart decision making,
sensitivity and understanding.
Performances include those on learning disability, bullies, divorce,
cerebral palsy, autism as well as gang awareness. The City of Santa
Clarita's Anti-Gang Task Force has provided the puppets and scripts
used in the Gang Awareness performances.

Teddy
Bear Patrol provides comfort to a child involved in a traumatic
situation. This project was the first endeavor of the chapter, beginning
in 1989. The soft, cuddly bears are given to children who are involved
in automobile accidents, domestic problems, separation from family,
or facing surgery.
Since 1989, the bears have been given out by local law enforcement
to help ease the fears of children. In addition, the Valencia Town
Center and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's Department of
Surgical Services, also distribute our bears.
Over the past 16 years, more than 8,000 bears have been distributed
solely in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Remember
9-1-1 educates children what to do in an emergency situation.
Remember 9-1-1 is a coloring book that is the perfect way to introduce
this topic to children in their classrooms and at home. A set of
four crayons is included. Remember 9-1-1 distribution date of September
11th is a direct link to the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
When an emergency strikes, it is vital that children know what steps
they should take. Dialing 9-1-1 is a lesson they should always remember.
The coloring books and crayons are distributed to children in our
four elementary school districts in the lower grades. Each year,
on September 11th, teachers take the time to provide practical help
to their students on emergency preparedness. This classroom instruction
then goes home to the family for reinforcement of the lessons taught.
Saving a life one day may occur because a child knew the very basic
step of dialing 9-1-1.
Family Ties means feeling like part of the community
and that is important to Assistance League of Santa Clarita and
this project is a direct result of this commitment. The elderly
patients at Santa Clarita Convalescent Hospital are
often the forgotten members of society. Since 1990, it has been
our desire to see that they are not overlooked. Once a month, chapter
members provide home-cooked meals for the residents to enjoy. This
treat is a welcome enjoyment for the patients and our members take
great pride in preparing the evening's meal. Additionally, we make
sure no patient is forgotten on his or her birthday. For many, this
special day would go without notice if it were not for Assistance
League’s members. We purchase and festively wrap individually
selected gifts for each person and help him or her celebrate this
milestone in their life.
Los Angeles Retarded Citizens (LARC) Ranch is provided
with an annual party for the residents of LARC Ranch. The project,
which began in 1990, is an occasion for social interaction between
the residents and the chapter members. It reminds us too that everyone
belongs in our community regardless of their circumstances. The
evening's festivities includes live music, dancing and a dinner
all courtesy of the chapter’s members. Each year, our party
draws over 100 residents of this center.
